Liminal Space
--
Liminal space has been described as occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold. — Wikipedia
- “I was in the liminal space between past and present”
The word “liminal” comes from the Latin word “limen,” which means threshold. To be in a liminal space means to be on the precipice of something new but not quite there yet. You can be in a liminal space physically, emotionally, or metaphorically. Being in a liminal space can be incredibly uncomfortable for most people. — Very Well Mined.
I am comfortable in the liminal space. To me transition feels almost synonymous to transformation and growth. It forces me to really face just how good I am at dropping into the present moment without worrying whats to come or what has already passed. Afterall, we all know this exact moment is all thats really guaranteed anyway.
Earlier this month I was granted the gift of taking a 12 hour walk. Epiphanies' presented themself to me with ease; one of which was “why not keep going?” “why not see what lies down this unchartered path?” I wasn’t time poor. In fact I was quite the opposite. I had all day to explore the depths of sugarloaf my otherwise busy schedule wouldn’t normally allow. And I thought to myself.. this is what life must have used to feel like. When we weren’t burden with devices that constantly distracted us from the most valuable gift we can give ourselves and one another; our undivided attention. How many meetcutes would have never happened otherwise? Afterall people just kept walking, they had to. There weren’t many other means of communication, what a gift. Peace. Silence. Undivided attention. uninterrupted Prescence.
I think this is what is most needed when one finds themself in liminal space. For it is only when we give ourselves the gift of our undivided attention that we can truly get still and quiet enough to seek and find “our next right action” For lifes miracles are really in the micro steps. Thats where the magic is. The different route home you decide to take that flips your perspective. The phone call you ignore because what you’re doing in the moment is more important.
This is sacred space. Our energetic Prescence. For where attention goes, energy flows. And all liminal space asks is that we simply take notice, to our intuition, to that voice…
